Take the entire family on a round-the-world bicycle trip ! ? !

If you can cycle a mile, you can cycle around the world

November 21st, 2010 · 2 Comments

I was doing an interview the other day and the interviewer said, “Tell me about your family.”  I’m sure the assumption was that we were all super athletes or some such thing.  But instead I responded, “We are just your normal, ordinary everyday family.  There is nothing special about us at all.  We’ve just decided to live our dreams.”  I truly believe that.

Anybody can do what we are doing – it’s only a matter of making the decision to do it.

My friend, Kate Nunes, wrote after cycling across the USA with her husband and six-year-old daughter on a triple bike, “We’ve always said it’s one pedal stroke, one day at a time, and if you string a bunch of them together anyone can do it. It’s true. Riding across the country is just a series of medium-long day rides. That’s all it is. The hard part is being determined enough to keep doing them day after day.

She is right.  If you can cycle a mile, you can cycle around the world.  It’s all in your head.

I just finished reading Rowboat in a Hurricane by Julie Angus.  In it she talks about her encounter with John Ridgeway who, in 1966, rowed from Cape Cod to Ireland in 92 days in little more than an open dory.

We’re all pretty much the same,” John said.  He tapped his index finger to his temple.  “It’s what’s in here that counts.”  He paused a moment.  “And whatever happens, never give up.

I think Ridgeway’s words to Julie apply to pretty much every facet of life.   No matter what we want to do – ride a bike from one end of the world to the other, go back to university, or make the world’s best pancake – it’s all in the mind.  We just have to decide what we’re going to do, take it one step at a time, and never give up.

Winterize Your Lips: Bobbi Brown Lip Balm SPF 15

Winterize Your Lips: Bobbi Brown Lip Balm SPF 15

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 07:39 AM PST

This time of year I’ve amped my water intake up to ensure that my skin is hydrated and clear.  I’ve gone through gallons of Brita-filtered water, a water bottle is never far from my side.  Moisture, moisture, moisture is a winter survival skill.

There are some products that I cannot wait to photograph for CafĂ© Makeup, so I can start using the item sooner.  Bobbi Brown Lip Balm SPF 15 ($17) is one of those products.

Bobbi Brown’s Lip Balm feels wonderful.  I love to wear this to condition and moisturize, I keep one by my desk so that I can wear it for a few hours at a time.  I wouldn’t hesitate to wear this to bed, to moisturize while I sleep.  It applies sheerly, bringing out the natural color of the lip.  The moisturizing properties erase any lip lines that are the natural result of the drier indoor air that we all seem to encounter this time of year.

I am relieved to report that this does not clog my pores around my lipline.  It seems to be fairly long-wearing–I can still feel it after a few hours although I drink water frequently.  Although you might be able to get a similar effect with cheaper products, Bobbi Brown’s Lip Balm feels much better and I believe it is more effective at moisturizing and conditioning.  And because my lips look better, it helps all my other lip products look better when I wear them.  I’m going to count this among my winter must-haves.  True love.

Many thanks as always to Cafemakeup.com

Wheels of Change: How Women Rode the Bicycle to Freedom (With a Few Flat Tires Along the Way)

Brought to you by Top Town Bikes and Bicycles

Take a lively look at women's history from aboard a bicycle, which granted females the freedom of mobility and helped empower women's liberation. Through vintage photographs, advertisements, cartoons, and songs, Wheels of Change transports young readers to bygone eras to see how women used the bicycle to improve their lives. Witty in tone and scrapbook-like in presentation, the book deftly covers early (and comical) objections, influence on fashion, and impact on social change inspired by the bicycle, which, according to Susan B. Anthony, "has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world."

Who’s got the best Black Friday deals on stand mixers?

Brought to you By Cool Classic Kitchens

If you’re looking to score a deal on a stand mixer on Black Friday, Kohl’s is offering three models at reduced prices. A recently-leaked circular announced that they will offer the KitchenAid Professional 600 for $399 (normally priced at $499), the KitchenAid Artisan for $299 (regularly priced at $359), and the Kitchen Classic Plus for $199 (normally $259). Each mixer also includes an extra 10% in-store discount and a mail-in rebate for additional savings.

Sears will also offer comparable savings on the KitchenAid Classic for $199 (an additional $50 off can be achieved via mail-in rebate), as well as the KitchenAid Artisan for $299 (the final price is $269 with a $30 mail-in rebate). The stainless-steel Pro 500 is available at the same price as the Artisan. Sears also promises an additional 10% in-store discount on all stand mixers.

Worth braving the crowds?

The prices are good, but are the actual mixers worth subjecting yourself to the Black Friday mayhem?

The answer is yes.

The KitchenAid Artisan Series Stand Mixer and the KitchenAid Classic Series Stand Mixer are two of our best-reviewed models. Not only do they perform extremely well in professional tests, but they’ve received abundant positive owner feedback, too. Reviewers say the Artisan is best suited for kneading and mixing tougher dough, but it also does an exceptionable job at whipping heavy cream and egg whites. This mixer comes with a 5-quart stainless steel bowl and three attachments: a flat beater, whish and dough hook. Users say the 10-speed slide control and splash guard with chute make the Artisan easy to use.

The Classic Series also excels at the aforementioned tasks and offers many of the same convenient features. What’s more, it’s significantly cheaper than the Artisan. That said, it does have a smaller mixing bowl -- 4.5 quarts instead of 5 – and it’s only available in white. (The Artisan is available in 25 different colors, but the circulars don’t indicate which ones are in stock.)

The KitchenAid Professional 600 earns performance ratings that are on par with the KitchenAid Artisan and Classic. Experts warn, however, that it's noisier and larger -- about five pounds heavier and 2 inches taller. Rather than lifting the motor head, the bowl on the Pro slides up and down; this requires extra height clearance under cabinets. The Professional 600 mixer is available in 10 color choices. The Pro 500 is not covered in our full report on mixers, but it earns generally positive feedback at Amazon.com.

Bottom line

To save a nice chunk of cash on a stand mixer this holiday season, get up early on November 26th and head to either Kohl’s or Sears for their Black Friday deals.

From Istanbul, with caffeinated love

gift from istanbul
Gift from Istanbul
Mi friend muffin came back from vacation in Istanbul and was SOOO nice of her to bring me coffee (my bag smelled divine) and this little stove-top pot with such beautiful patterns, to make the coffee. See, In her book, I'm easy to shop for - colorful wacky tights, or coffee!
We met before much activity was going on around the city to sip some coffee and catch on some chisme(*must know word: gossip).

The picture I had posted earlier this week was also taken here, on Linden street.
Linden underwent a little street-face lift, there are now these large rocks to sit on, the nicely patterned rusty pieces, some new plants and more tree-like nature. I'm a fan!

So here is some documentation of the caffeinated alleyways. Blue bottle never sees a slow morning!

How do you cope with losing a child ?

I know, that’s a big question, and I cannot imagine how anyone could.

I recently bumped into an old friend who I was at college with but had lost touch and hadn’t seen for about 20 years,

We got chatting and I found out she had married a lovely guy called mike and they had had 3 children, 2 sons and one daughter called Ella.  Then she told me her very sad news, they had lost their daughter Ella two years ago when she was only nine.

She had had Rett syndrome and was severely disabled but, as her mother said, also very beautiful.

I couldn’t imagine how you cope with something like that. She then went onto tell me that losing Ella had left a very great hole in their lives as so much of their time was taken up with looking after her.

Then in a very positive and enthusiastic way she told me how she had set up a Charity called Rosie’s Rainbow fund, providing music therapy for special needs children and adults sick in hospital. They also organise other special needs activities and bereavement support for those who have lost children and others also, and she said, “So it’s all go !”

There are some very fine human beings who live among us and the best we can do is to learn from their examples.

This is, unfortunately, the best and only advice I could ever hope to offer in answer to my question.

For more about their charity please visit Rosies Rainbow Fund

    Biking to Fresh Produce

    Brought to you by TopTownBikes&Bicyles.com

Today’s Chronicle features our Bike About Town column about the Mission Community Market and all the other great neighborhood markets that are popping up across San Francisco. Thanks to members Michael Tanner for writing and Pamela Palma for photographing.

Mission Comunity Market. Photo by Pamela Palma.

Mission Community Market: Bike to fresh produce
It’s always a good time to haggle for your regional veggies in an alfresco setting. But with the advent of harvest season, it’s harder to say no to a bike basket full of Mother Nature’s free-range heirloom goodies at the peak of their virtue, at a farmers’ market near you.

So why not take advantage of the final week of daylight-saving time to visit the weekly Mission Community Market on Bartlett Street, and see how such gatherings are bringing new life to urban streetscapes?

Since July, the Mission Community Market has brought in many of the same farm-fresh fresh foods as the usual markets. This market originated in response to “a lot of community members (who) came forward asking for a farmers’ market unique to the Mission, even a community market,” says Jeremy Shaw, the market’s organizer.

The Mission Community Market stresses a more service-oriented approach. To that end, the market opens up one block of Bartlett Street (at 22nd Street) for community organizations and developing local businesses (such as jewelers and bakers), plows revenue back into the neighborhood and reserves slots for kids’ activities – including musical performances, dance space and after-school programs involving food and nutrition, sponsored by nearby schools.

“It’s a neglected part of the street that could use a little love,” Shaw says, “and that’s what we’re trying to give it.”

Pick up produce for the rest of the week, but plan to eat your dinner there. You won’t want to miss the live music and dance performances, while enjoying tasty eats from street food vendors.

“I like the local flavor of it,” says photographer Pamela Palma, who shops by bike at markets throughout the city and the East Bay. “I like the use of Bartlett Street much more.”

The market is also part of a movement to make streets safer and more inviting for biking and walking. Toddlers can be seen taking advantage of the open street by zooming their bikes around the kids’ area. Overall, Shaw says, it’s “a way to forget about the bustle and enjoy your street.”

“It’s a good strategy to bring about change without waiting for huge capital investment,” says Ilaria Salvadori, Mission District Streetscape Plan project co-manager. And though the Mission Community Market’s inclusion of neighborhood schools gives it a local feel, this unique use of the street is sparking reclamation in various corners of the city.

Other farmers’ markets are flourishing throughout the city as well, including the Castro Farmers’ Market (3-7 p.m. Wed., Market and Noe streets), Alemany (7 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Sat.), Fillmore Farmers’ Market (9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sat., Fillmore and O’Farrell streets), the Divisadero Farmers’ Market (10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sun., Divisadero and Grove streets), or the thronging Ferry Building (10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tues., Thurs.; 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Sat.) which includes bike valet parking on Saturdays.

Of course, after you’ve securely stowed your bike and loaded up on socially and environmentally correct victuals, you’ll need to haul your bounty out, so come prepared with baskets or panniers, or at least a generous backpack. For serious sprees, SF Bicycle Coalition members can even borrow one of the Coalition’s bike trailers – it’s pumpkin season after all. Learn how to carry more things on your bike for the short (or long) haul atwww.sfbike.org/racks or reserve a trailer at www.sfbike.org/service_trailer.

4-8 p.m. today. Bartlett and 22nd streets, S.F. For more information, along with maps, vendor lists, and instructions for participating, volunteering or donating, go to www.missioncommunitymarket.org.

The bike valet at the Ferry Building Farmers Market is located in Harry Bridges Plaza across the street from the Ferry Building from 8am to 2pm, go to http://www.sfbike.org/valet for more info. More information on the Ferry Building Farmers Market is at www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com, and other markets are featured onwww.pcfma.com.

Please take a moment to sign an important petition requesting the Indonesian Government to create an effective law against cruelty to dogs. Every day in Bali dogs are poisoned or stolen, often for meat. Others are starved, beaten or neglected, but there is no law to protect them. The Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) works proactively to educate children in the correct treatment of companion animals and provides free medical care to street dogs and dogs owned by Balinese including sterilization, ambulance services and a rescue program. But without effective animal welfare laws, BAWA is handicapped.
